The tussle between the ruling Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal is getting intense with each passing day. The latest in the duel between the two parties is cancellation of BJP president Amit Shah’s event in Kolkata.

The party had to cancel its Nagrik Sammelan scheduled for September 12 due to lack of venue. The event was part of Amit Shah’s 3-day visit to Kolkata from 11-13 September.

The public event was expected to draw a huge crowd of supporters for which stadiums like Netaji Indoor Stadium or Rabindra Sarovar Stadium were sought. However, the management of both the venues turned down the party’s plea for booking citing renovation and prior commitments.

Amit Shah will now be meeting state party unit leaders at Indian Council for Cultural Relations or ICCR which is run by Ministry of External Affairs. The BJP president will be holding three meetings with party leaders at three different venues, all of which are maintained by the Central government.

“We are compelled to make these changes because we don’t want people of Bengal to suffer and we don’t believe in vindictive politics. We have faith in development as we have come to power across country with the same mandate and Mamata Banerjee government is afraid of our swelling support base in the state,” senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya said.

“She can stop us from getting a venue but not stop us from making a place in the hearts of the people,” he added.
